English: Middlesbrough Central Library Overlooked by the statue of John Vaughan 1799 - 1868, discoverer of ironstone in the Eston Hills, builder of the first iron works in Middlesbrough and one time mayor of Middlesbrough.
The library was built in 1910 with the generosity of Andrew Carnegie, the Amercian steel magnate, who gave £15,000 towards its building. He made it clear the money was to be used for the building only, not for the site nor for the maintenance. This money meant that the reknowned architectual partnership of Thomas Edwin Cooper and Samuel Bridgeman Russell could be commissioned for the design and superior materials used in the construction. It is a Grade II listed building.
